Renton, WA – The City of Renton is expanding its photo enforcement program by installing red-light safety cameras at three intersections. The cameras will be activated on May 1 and will detect and photograph vehicles running red lights. A 30-day grace period will be in effect and at the end of the grace period, $124 citations will be issued.

The new cameras will be located at these intersections:

  • Park Avenue North and Logan Avenue North
  • Talbot Road South and South Grady Way
  • Talbot Road South and South Puget Drive

“The photo enforcement program is an important part of the city’s traffic enforcement efforts. These devices help us enforce traffic laws and maximize the deployment of our officers,” said Commander Chad Karlewicz of the Renton Police Department. “We strongly urge drivers to be alert, obey the law, and refrain from distracted driving.”

Renton began its photo enforcement program in 2008, placing cameras at several key intersections and five school zones. Each area has signs indicating photo enforcement is in effect. Citations are only issued following police review and are sent to the vehicle’s registered owner. Citations are not applied to an individual’s driving record and are not recorded by the Washington State Department of Licensing.

Vehicle owners who receive a citation will have access to photographs of the violation and can challenge the citation.

The city contracts with American Traffic Solutions, Inc. to administer the program.

More information on the program can be found at rentonwa.gov/photoenforcement.
