Renton City Councilmember Ed Prince earns Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership from Association of Washington Cities
Councilmember completed 30 hours of training
in five core areas to earn this distinction
RENTON, WA (JUNE 29, 2023) – City of Renton Councilmember Ed Prince has earned an Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership (CML) from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC). Kristi Rowland, Renton’s Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, presented the award at Monday night's Renton City Council meeting. Rowland also serves as the current President of the Washington City/Council Management Association and on the Association of Washington Cities board.
“Congratulations to Councilmember Prince for earning his advanced certification,” said Mayor Pavone. “His desire to go beyond his normal councilmember duties reflects his dedication to serving our residents.”
AWC’s Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership program recognizes city and town elected officials for accomplishing training in five core areas:
-
Roles, responsibilities, and legal requirements
-
Public sector resource management
-
Community planning and development
-
Effective local leadership
-
Diversity, equity, and inclusion
Councilmember Prince was awarded the advanced certificate after earning an additional 30 CML credits – including at least one training in the diversity, equity, and inclusion competency area – and demonstrating community service. He earned the first step, the Certificate of Municipal Leadership, requiring 30 credits in 2015.
Councilmember Prince is serving his third four-year term on the city council, first winning the election for Position Five in November 2011. He is in his second year serving as the Council's President Pro-Tem in 2023 and chairs the Planning & Development Committee, vice-chairs the Public Safety Committee and is a member of the Transportation Committee.
“Being a councilmember is a serious obligation to me and receiving my Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership continues to give me more skills to better serve the residents of Renton,” Prince states.
Councilmember Prince is the Executive Director of the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs. He also serves on the AWC Board of Directors, is a member of the Sound Transit Board of Directors and Sound Cities Association, co-chairs the King County Regional Homeless Authority, and is vice-chair of the Puget Sound Regional Council Growth Management Policy Board.
Councilmember Prince is the third member of the council to earn an Advanced Certificate, joining Ruth Pérez (2019) and Valerie O’Halloran (2022). Mayor Armondo Pavone (2023) and Councilmember Kim-Khánh Văn (2022) also hold a certificate.
He and his wife, Meegan, have a son and a daughter.
