Rainier Avenue North reopens
Road had been closed since Wednesday afternoon due to a sinkhole
RENTON, WA - City of Renton Public Works crews have reopened all lanes of Rainier Avenue North in the 900 block which had been closed since Wednesday afternoon due to a sinkhole. Motorists are asked to drive carefully and use caution. The sinkhole was approximately 25’x30’x15’ deep, stretching across the entire five-lane roadway.
“Our Public Works staff are to be commended on the way they responded to this emergency,” said Renton Mayor Denis Law. “They worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure the sinkhole was repaired and the roads were safe in a timely manner.”
Crews worked non-stop since late Wednesday morning to remove and replace a 36” drain pipe and reposition catch basins and vaults. They then backfilled the section and reapplied asphalt.
Traffic was detoured during the repairs, but businesses remained open and accessible.
