City Council chooses six to interview for vacant council seat

Interviews will be on Monday, Feb 3, at 3:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers

Renton City Council 2020RENTON, WA - The Renton City Council has chosen six Renton residents to interview to fill vacant seat #2 on the council. The council announced their choices at their regular Monday, Jan. 27 meeting.

The six are James Alberson, Angelina Benedetti, Wesley Bergquist, Jennifer Davis Hayes, Linda Smith and Maria Teresa Vasquez. Each of the six current councilmembers submitted one candidate.

The council will conduct the interviews during their Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday, Feb. 3, at 3:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the Council Chambers on the 7th Floor of City Hall, 1055 S. Grady Way. The meeting will be shown live on Channel 21 in Renton and streamed at rentonwa.gov/21.

Later that same night, at the regularly scheduled council meeting, the council may vote to appoint a candidate from the slate of candidates. Whomever is selected will then be sworn in by the city clerk at the next regularly scheduled council meeting.

The city received 22 applications for the position, which was held by current Mayor Armondo Pavone.

Councilmembers will not engage in any outside discussions about the applicants prior to the Committee of the Whole meeting. All discussions about the qualifications of the applicants among the councilmembers will only be during council meetings which are open to the public.
