One of the unique features is the decorative water mist feature.

Unlike a typical water fountain or splash pad, the feature emits a fine water mist into the air. There are no standing water pools. The water coming from the mist nozzles is the same as the treated and safe drinking water that flows from your home faucets.

Mist water is run through a series of filters to remove particles that may clog the nozzle. Once it reaches the nozzle, the water is emitted at a safe pressure and is never heated. Once in the air, the mist either evaporates or enters nearby drains. It does not recirculate through the system.

The mist feature has a wind sensor that shuts off when the wind is too strong, so the mist doesn't spray onto nearby seating areas and playground equipment. Once the wind lessens, it turns back on.

The Celebration for opening Phase I of Sunset Neighborhood Park was held on June 16, 2018.

Phase I improvements were partially funded with a $1.7 million Direct Appropriation by the Washington State Legislature. 

Phase I features an entry plaza leading from the library, a major north-south pedestrian walkway reflecting the connection along Harrington Avenue, restroom facilities, a rain garden storm water detention facility, pergola with seating, walkways and seating areas throughout the park, and a large lawn area for gathering and playing.

Construction of Phase II of Sunset Neighborhood Park opened on Jan. 28, 2021. Work began on this phase in November 2019.

The development of the park is a catalyst for the redevelopment of the entire Sunset Neighborhood. The park provides ample public open space for the community.

Sunset Neighborhood Park contains unique playground equipment. The most striking is the Berliner Neptune XXL, a 30-foot high climbing structure. It is the only structure of its type in the Pacific Northwest and just one of four in the United States. Connected to the tower are two Helix Climbing Towers, one 19-feet and the other 25-feet. These three connected strictures are the only ones of their type in the United States.

The second phase of Sunset Neighborhood Park added:

• Playgrounds (ages 2-5 and 6-12)
• Parent plaza with picnic tables
• Adult fitness area
• Shaded seating under pergolas
• Performance/open space lawn
• Rain gardens
• Loop walkways
