Like every other place in the world, Renton has some potential hazards that could result in a disaster. Here in Renton the risks we watch for most are from earthquakes, fires, floods (including dam failure), landslides and sinkholes, severe storms (including high winds), volcanic eruption, and winter storms.
In some cases, such as for earthquake, there is no way to eliminate the hazard, but steps can be taken to reduce the damage. Earthquake mitigation might include fastening heavy furniture to the wall so it doesn't tip over, or bolting your home to its foundation. With other hazards, smart action taken in advance can prevent the disaster from even occurring in the first place, like with fire prevention measures to prevent a wildfire from getting started. This is called hazard mitigation.
Hazard Mitigation Plan Revision
The City of Renton is in the process of rewriting the Hazard Mitigation Plan for the city. Our mitigation plan is focused on natural hazards. The current plan is part of the King County Hazard Mitigation Plan that will expire soon.
