Councilmember James Alberson, Jr., elected to serve as 2025 Renton City Council President
Councilmember Ruth Pérez to serve as President Pro Tempore
RENTON, WA (DECEMBER 11, 2024) – At the regular Renton City Council meeting on Monday, December 2, Councilmember James Alberson, Jr. was elected to serve as City Council President for 2025. As Council President, Alberson will set the agenda and conduct the Committee of the Whole meetings that precede a full city council meeting.
Councilmember Alberson is serving his four-year term on the council. He was elected in 2021 and started his term in 2022. He served as Council President Pro Tempore for the 2024 calendar year. He is currently chair of the Community Services Committee, vice-chair of the Planning & Development Committee, a member of the Utilities Committee, and member of the Renton Regional Fire Authority Governance Board.
Alberson’s past roles include serving as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Renton and a Renton Chamber of Commerce member, where he eventually served as Board Chair. He currently remains on as a Board Member. Alberson also has served as the HOA President of his neighborhood’s homeowners’ association for 15+ years.
He is a business owner and consultant and holds M.B.A. and B.S. degrees from Purdue University.
In 2025, Alberson will serve as the chair of the Renton Regional Fire Authority Governance Board.
He serves on the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board, South County Area Transportation Board, Eastside Transportation Partnership, LEOFF Board, Central Puget Sound Economic Development District Board, and Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.
Earlier this year, Alberson earned a Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities after completing more than 30 hours of training. This effort included at least one workshop on diversity, equity & inclusion, and demonstrating community service for a minimum of six months in duration, including service on statewide commissions, committees, councils, and task forces, board or committee chair positions with community organizations or leadership on projects such as fundraising efforts, campaigns, and significant events.
Councilmember Alberson will succeed Councilmember Ed Prince, who served as president until 2024.
Councilmember Ruth Pérez has been elected President Pro Tempore for the 2025 calendar year. The President Pro Tempore runs council meetings in the President’s absence. Councilmember Pérez has served on the Renton City Council since being appointed in 2014 and re-elected to the seat in 2017 and 2021. She is the first Latina and immigrant to serve in this body. Pérez previously served as the City Council President in 2020.
Both Councilmember Alberson and Councilmember Pérez begin their roles in January 2025.
