City to open Renton Community Center as cooling center
The center will open from 2 to 9 p.m. this Tuesday thru Friday, July 26-29 and Saturday, July 30 from 2 to 7:30 p.m.
RENTON, WA - The City of Renton will host a cooling center at Renton Community Center to help residents, especially seniors, cope with the forecasted heatwave.
The community center (1715 Maple Valley Hwy, Renton, 98057) will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday, July 26-29 and Saturday, July 30 from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Capacity will be limited to 100 people. Temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-to-upper 90s on all three days. If conditions continue, additional days may be added.
Face coverings are recommended for all who enter the facility. City staff will have a supply of masks and water. Please bring personal entertainment devices (including headphones) and books and relax in an air-conditioned and quiet environment. Connection to the city’s Wi-Fi will be available. Pets will be allowed if in carriers or on at least a 6-foot leash. Pets must be non-aggressive and continually supervised.
King County Library System branches are available as cooling shelters during regular business hours.
The Renton branch (100 Mill Avenues S) is open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The branch is closed on Mondays and Sundays.
The Renton Highlands branch (2801 NE 10th Street) is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays and from 1 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The branch is closed on Saturdays and open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study showed seniors are more prone to heat stress. The CDC recommends making plans to move those at risk in a hot home, especially older adults who live alone or have limited mobility, to a cooler location during the day.
