Basketball and volleyball now open, joining tennis and pickleball courts
RENTON, WA – After careful consideration for the safety of residents, the City of Renton re-opened basketball and volleyball courts for recreational play on Friday, June 26. These courts join tennis and pickle ball courts that reopened on June 9.
The lone exception is the basketball courts at Liberty Park in downtown Renton. Two weeks ago, all four backboards were vandalized and had to be removed. Parks Maintenance staff is in the process of purchasing replacements and will install them as soon as possible.
King County is currently in Phase 2 of the Governor’s “Safe Start Washington” plan. Phase 2 recommended that people gather in groups of five (5) or less. The city also asks residents and visitors to follow health guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Public Health – Seattle & King County for controlling the spread of COVID-19. These guidelines include wearing a face covering indoors and outdoors, maintain proper social distancing of at least 6-feet and regularly washing your hands.
The city will continue to reopen park amenities as “Safe Start Washington” thresholds and available resources allow. Current plans include:
-
A planned opening of the skate park at Liberty Park on Thursday, July 2
-
Performing safety inspections at playgrounds and reopening some before the Saturday, July 4 holiday
-
Open all other playgrounds sometime during the week of July 5
The city may be forced to close these play areas if public health information warrants such actions. Please do your part to adhere to COVID-19 protocols and keep parks and trails open.
Updated information will be posted on the Parks and Trails page on the city’s website or by calling the Community Services Department at (425) 430-6600.
