The Small Business Liaison helps businesses in Renton grow and succeed. We offer guidance and support to create a strong and inclusive economy where businesses of all sizes can thrive.

Business Assistance

Step 1.Choose Your Business Entity:

Before you begin the process of setting up your business, you first must decide on your legal business structure (e.g., sole proprietorship, corporation, LLC). Seek advice from a tax professional or business planner if you're unsure.

Step 2.Start with the State:

Visit Washington Secretary of State to register your business (online portal) and obtain a Unified Business Identifier (UBI) if required.

Step 3.Get a State Business License:

After your UBI number has been issued, register your business with the Washington State Department of Revenue (DOR) for tax compliance.

Step 4.Apply for Local Licensing:

Complete Renton's local licensing process after state registration. Renton Business Licenses expire on January 31st of each year, you must renew before the expiration deadline to keep your business license active. Use FileLocal to apply and renew your license each year.

Step 5.Understand Tax Classification:

Determine your tax category (retail, service, wholesale etc.) and ensure alignment with the WA State DOR guidelines.

Step 6.Small Business Tax Threshold:

No taxes are owed in Renton until your revenue exceeds $500,000 annually. Commercial spaces may incur square footage tax if above the threshold.
