Philip Arnold Park is a 10-acre neighborhood park nestled between Jones Avenue South and Beacon Way SE, atop historic Renton Hill.

It offers spectacular views of Seattle, the Kent valley, Lake Washington and the Olympic Mountain Range.

Park Improvement Project

Built in the 1960s, Philip Arnold Park is now over 60 years old and shows signs of aging and was in need of accessibility improvements. The park reopened on December 1, 2023. Major site improvements for the park include:

  • Accessible looped walkway and boardwalk

  • Playground replacement

  • Parking renovation

  • Activity building demolition

  • New picnic shelters and paved parent plaza

  • Portland Loo restroom

  • Basketball court renovation

  • Improved drainage and stormwater management

  • New park signs

CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) standards was used throughout the design process.

The construction contract was awarded to Active Construction Inc. Funding for the project includes 2019 Renton Parks Bond funds, Parks Impact Mitigation Fees, 2019 King County Proposition No. 1 Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Space Levy funding, and local funding.

Please contact Betsy Severtsen at [email protected] or 425-757-6657 with any questions.

One area of the park remains closed as stair and ramp railings have not yet arrived. To be fabricated accurately, measurements and designs for railings must occur after the concrete stairs and ramps are completed in the field. These railings are anticipated to arrive and be installed in February 2024. Miscellaneous landscape work will continue in the next few weeks and will not limit your use and enjoyment of the park.

Philip Arnold Park History

This park is named after fourteen-year-old Philip Keith Arnold, who in December 1948 was accidentally electrocuted while climbing a power pole near the current park property. He was in eighth grade at Renton Junior-Senior High and lived in the neighborhood on Beacon Avenue. He had just been named best Boy Scout in Renton.
