Byte of Renton for October 22, 2019
Mayor’s Newsletter
In his Oct. 18 newsletter, Mayor Law welcomed Mayor Shozo Katayama and a delegation from Renton’s Sister City of Nishiwaki, Japan, as the cities celebrated 50 years as Sister Cities. The mayor also discussed a major step the city has undertaken to assist the homeless in our community.
City Council Corner
Renton’s City Council meets on the first four Mondays of the month at 7 p.m. Here’s a recap of their meeting on Oct. 21.
Snow Class
Patrick Zellner, street maintenance manager, and John Kalmbach, street maintenance supervisor, held the city’s inaugural “In the Know about Snow” presentation last week. Patrick and John explained how and why the city responds to snow, including preventative measures, plowing plans and priorities and how residents can help. They also showed off some cool GPS software. We’re planning to produce some videos based on their presentation that we will share. In the meantime, we have maintenance plans, snow routes and winter ready tips on winter ready tips.
Kennydale Reservoir
It doesn’t look like much now, but work is well underway on the Kennydale water reservoir. Pilings have been driven and this Friday (Oct. 25), the foundation will be poured. This work will necessitate two pumper trucks onsite (1404 N. 30th St.) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Additionally several concrete trucks will be in line along N. 30th St. and Park Ave. N. Expect intermittent lane closures and minor traffic delays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
CED Permitting
The city started implementation of a new permit application process on Oct. 21. The city will stagger the launch dates and continue to accept applications on My Building Permit until the change-over dates. Plumbing permits made the switch on Oct. 21 and will be followed by reroofing permits on Nov. 4; mechanical permits on Nov. 18; and electrical permits on Dec. 9. Inspections and permit status will be available on both sites until the final switch-over on Dec. 9. Registration is now available at permitting.rentonwa.gov. Questions can be directed to the city’s Permit Center at 425-430-7200.
"At the Movies"
This week’s video feature is Renton Responds, our new application that allows residents an easy way to bring issues to the city’s attention. Renton Responds is available in the app stores for Apple and Android devices as well as on our website.
The city has produced several videos on a wide range of topics. These videos can also be seen on channel 21 in Renton or online.
Traffic Impacts
Geotechnical contractors will be conducting soil sampling along Williams Avenue South and Wells Avenue South between South Grady Way and South 2nd Street all week. Expect intermittent lane closures and minor traffic delays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The full traffic report is online.
REACH
REACH (Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches) is planning their annual free Thanksgiving dinner and they can use your help. They plan to feed 150 and are in need of donated food items. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their Day Center in City Hall, 1055 South Grady Way, Renton 98057. They ask that all donations are delivered by November 22.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Renton. The trees outside City Hall are decorated with purple lights and inside are life-sized silhouettes of Renton residents who died as a result of domestic violence. The silhouettes are part of the Silent Witness Initiative. The Renton Police Department has a Domestic Violence Victim Advocate on staff to provide assistance to victims of domestic violence who live within the city limits.
