The project includes the replacement/rehabilitation of 65 linear feet of 36-inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP) and 78 linear feet of 24-inch CMP to extend or restore the service life of the stormwater pipes.

The project is partially funded through the King County Flood Control District’s 2018 Flood Reduction Grant.  The grant covers 75% of the project’s estimated costs for design, grant management and environmental permit preparation.

Contract Award Information

Several engineering firms from the Municipal Research and Service Center (MRSC) Consultant Roster were assessed based upon their Statement of Qualifications. The most highly qualified firm selected to provide engineering design services was CHS Engineers, LLC.

The agreement with CHS Engineers, LLC, in the amount of $69,200, was signed by Mayor Law and executed on December 20, 2018.

Project work under this agreement will include hydraulic analysis; topographical and boundary survey; alternative analysis; developing construction plans, specifications and cost estimates and providing assistance during bidding.

Project Description

The projects consist of replacing an existing 65 linear feet of 36-inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP) located near 901 Rainier Avenue North and an existing 78 linear feet of 24-inch CMP located on Benson Road South. Trenchless technology, such as slip lining and cured in place pipe versus open cut excavation, will be evaluated during the project design phase.  The replacement of these two CMPs was determined necessary due to age and structurally poor conditions. These improvements will reduce the risk of upstream street flooding, and preserve public access and commuter road safety.

Project Update

The consultant has started the design phase of the project. The engineering design phase of this project includes:

  • Reviewing of existing data

  • Survey and base mapping

  • Hydraulic analysis

  • Obtaining a temporary construction easement

  • Environmental permitting and determination

  • Development of design report, construction plans and specifications
