Renton native joined the department in 1998 and has served as deputy chief since 2013

RENTON, WA – Deputy Chief Ed VanValey was sworn in as the City of Renton’s police chief in a ceremony at the October 1st City Council meeting. Mayor Denis Law presided over the swearing-in.

“Ed has earned the respect of his colleagues through his leadership positions in the department,” said Mayor Law. “He has proven himself to be an outstanding officer and I know he will be an exceptional chief.” 

Chief VanValey is a native of Renton, a graduate of Lindbergh High School and a member of the Renton Police Department since 1998. He was promoted to sergeant in 2008, commander in 2012 and deputy chief in 2013. He was deployed for 18 months from 2003-2005 to the Middle East as a captain in the United States Army in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and retired in September 2016 as a major in the Washington National Guard.

“I am very fortunate to have been raised in this great city and am honored to be Renton’s police chief,” said VanValey. “It will be a privilege to lead the finest law enforcement agency in the area.” 

Chief VanValey graduated from Central Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Justice. He was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Army National Guard.

He replaces Kevin Milosevich who retired after 33 years with the department, including the last 12 years as chief.
