The Meaning of Juneteenth

Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in our country with the freeing of slaves in Texas and is a significant milestone in our country's history.

Benita Horn, the City's Inclusion & Equity Consultant to the Mayor's Office, explains the significance of Juneteenth and how the city and community partner to celebrate the occasion.

A Conversation with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Reconstruction is one of the most misunderstood chapters in American history. Come watch Civil War and Reconstruction, a film interview with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in which he discusses the topic of Reconstruction. Reconstruction is the period right after the end of slavery and the Civil War. Brother Gates will discuss the true history of the Reconstruction period from the early days of freedom to the systematic disassembly of many of the gains afforded former slaves during the Reconstruction period.

This panel discussion, facilitated by Reverend James Barnett, dives into the purpose and issues of Reconstruction: myth vs. truth, progression vs. regression, and surviving vs. thriving; and discusses how we can apply lessons from the history of Reconstruction today.

Virtual Tour of Renton African-American Historical Sites

with Benita R. Horn and John Houston

Join us in a virtual tour narrated by long-time Renton residents John Houston and Benita R. Horn. African Americans began migrating to Renton to escape the segregated South in the early 1900’s and seek a better future for their families. Their industry helped build Renton and enables us to highlight landmarks that honor their contributions up to the present.

Renton’s Got Talent: Teen & Youth Talent Show

As part of the Juneteenth Celebration 2019, there will be an exciting talent show featuring 15-20 of the best young talent Renton and the surrounding communities have to offer. The event will be emceed by the talented Christopher Robinson, Director of CryOut! Renton.

The entertainers will be vying for a $100 1st prize, $50 2nd prize, and $25 3rd prize. And guess what - the audience, will do the judging. The talent show will begin promptly at 4 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. A free-will offering will be taken up to help defray the costs.

Art on Display

African and African-American art will be on display courtesy of local residents.
