On Tuesday, August 6, 2019, neighborhoods throughout Renton are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “36th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.

National Night Out logo with backpacksNational Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Renton Police Department, will involve over 16,790 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 38 million people are expected to participate in ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime’.

This year the city is encouraging citizens who register their NNO neighborhood event with the Renton Police Department to have a backpack drive to assist in providing backpacks to school children in-need this fall. Backpacks should be new and empty of any contents. Officers will collect these donated backpacks during our neighborhood visits on August 6.

What is National Night Out?

National Night Out is designed to:

  1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness

  2. Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts;

  3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships

  4. Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

On August 6, residents in neighborhoods throughout Renton and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors. Many neighborhoods throughout Renton will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, pizza parties, bicycle parades, potlucks and various other activities.

We’re encouraging neighborhoods to register their National Night Out events with the Renton Police Department so we have the opportunity to come visit your individual activities between the hours of 5:30 pm and 9:00 pm (Note: there will not be a city-sponsored main event as in year’s past. We have decided to follow the national model which is based on individual neighborhoods registering their own events).

Registrations can be completed via this link. (Although every effort will be made to visit each and every registered event, due to occasional limited staffing, staff visits may need to be on a first registered/first served basis.) Deadline for registrations is August 1, 2019.

If you are looking for tips and/or ideas on how to plan an event in your neighborhood, please contact Cyndie Morris in the Community Programs Unit.
