Specialized Recreation

The Specialized Recreation Program is pleased to provide a variety of inclusive recreational opportunities as well as adaptive programs for persons with disabilities. Our program provides an opportunity to participate in group leisure and recreational activities in the least restrictive environment possible. We welcome and encourage youth and adults with special needs to register for all programs offered, not just the programs listed on this page.

Registration is available by walk-in, over the phone (425) 430-6700, or through CyberSignUp.

Pre-registration is required for all programs.

Club Thursday

Ages 16 and up. Cost for the social program per quarter is $34 for residents and $40 for non-residents. All programs are held at the Renton Senior Activity Center from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. unless otherwise stated.

Special Olympics

The Renton Recreation Division offers sports training and competition through Special Olympics. Individual, team, and unified sports are provided. Before participating, athletes must submit a current Special Olympics Washington Application for Participation (AFP) and a Renton Recreation Division Specialized Recreation Information Form. Fees vary based on the sport and season.

Special Interest Courses

Ages 13 and up. Explore a wide variety of art courses and cooking classes. Enjoy the wonders of sculpting projects with your own hands. Learn the basics of cooking and preparing food. Get your creative juices flowing with a collection of arts and crafting classes. Register in person at the Renton Community Center, over the phone at (425) 430-6700, or on CyberSignup.

Exciting Excursions

Ages 16 and up. Meet at the Renton Community Center for a fun day out! Plan on bringing $30 for admission, food, and souvenirs, but costs will vary depending on the excursion.

Coaches, Program Assistance, Instructors, and More...

Our Specialized Recreation Program is pleased to provide a variety of inclusive recreational opportunities, as well as adaptive programs designed for persons with disabilities. We are very active in year-round Special Olympics Sports, outdoor adventure activities, community outings, social programs, and a theater arts program (S.T.A.R. Performers). Volunteers are needed to coach sports teams, assist with social functions, and participate in our inclusive theater production. Current opportunities include:

  • Thursday Night Social Club
  • Special Olympics Basketball (January through March)
  • Special Olympics Soccer (March through May)
  • Special Olympics Track and Field (March through May)
  • Art Program
