Amending Tax Returns

Amending a Tax Return

To amend a return, complete the following:

  • Make a copy of the originally filed tax return that needs to be corrected
  • At the top of the return in large letters, write "AMENDED".
  • With a simple strike through using red or bold ink, cross out any erroneous figures. If possible, highlight the corrections so they are easily seen.
  • Make the appropriate corrections on the return and recalculate the totals.
  • If recalculation of your amended return results in money owed, include a check or money order when mailing the amended return.
  • If seeking a refund, include a letter or note with your amended return explaining the reason for the changes.

Mail the explanation letter, amended tax return(s), and check/money order as appropriate to:

City of Renton
Tax and Licensing Division
1055 South Grady Way
Renton, WA 98057

The city may only honor refunds dating back four years prior to the year in which the refund request is made, so long as the period covered by the amended return has not been subject to an assessment or judicial proceeding.
