Firefighter Recruitment Information

The Role of a Firefighter

The nature of firefighting work involves controlling, extinguishing and preventing fires and providing aid in the saving of lives.  A firefighter must possess sound judgment, personal integrity, maintain physical fitness and exercise initiative.  In return, the Renton Fire Department offers challenge, excitement, a "team" environment and many career opportunities.


Firefighter Applicant Qualifications

Entry Applicant Qualifications

Entry level applicants must meet the following criteria:
· Age 18 at the time of examination.
· United States citizen; read and speak the English language.
· High school graduate or equivalent.
· Possession of a Washington State driver's license upon employment.
· Ability to pass a series of qualifying pre-employment examinations.


Academy and JATC Training

New firefighters attend a twelve-week academy program where they obtain Firefighter I and II Certification.  After successful completion of training they are assigned to a shift and begin working a 46.6 hour week, 24 hours on, 48 hours off shift rotation with a shift off every sixth shift (Kelly Day).  

All Entry-Level firefighters serve a 12-month period of probation where job performance is formally evaluated by a supervisor.  Concurrently, new firefighters are enrolled in the three-year JATC Apprenticeship Program, which is a condition of employment.  At the end of the three year program, the fire fighter will have both a Journeyman's Certificate.


Testing Process

Entry Level and lateral (experienced) Firefighter

The testing process consists of a written examination, CPAT (Candidate Physical Abilities Test), and an oral board interview.  The first two parts of the testing process is conducted by Public Safety Testing.  The top candidates based on the written exam score and successfully passing the CPAT will be invited to an oral board interview.  Each phase has standardized criteria that must successfully be met by a candidate to qualify him/her to continue in the hiring process.  An applicant's failure to meet the criteria in any phase constitutes grounds for disqualification.  If you have general questions about the initial testing process, you can learn more on the Public Safety Testing website or you can contact them at 1.866.HIRE-911 (1.866.447.3911).  Candidates who successfully complete all phases of the process will be placed on the eligibility register according to their composite score, plus veterans' preference points, if applicable.


General Testing Information

When you apply for the position of firefighter, you are actually applying for placement on an eligibility register. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you may move on to a competitive selection process, which may include the following components:
· Written examination
· CPAT (Candidate Physical Abilities Test)
· Oral board interview
· Background/reference check
· Psychological evaluation
· Medical examination/drug screening
