RENTON, WA – On Monday, August 14, Renton City Council unanimously passed a resolution banning the location of supervised illegal substance injection facilities in and around city limits.

Resolution 4317 opposed the siting of illegal substance injection facilities within Renton City limits or within areas of incorporated King County associated with the potential annexation areas or urban growth areas of the City of Renton.
The Council noted that the siting of a supervised injection facility within the City of Renton to facilitate illegal drug use would be detrimental to the public health, safety, and welfare of the residents of Renton.

The city recognizes the challenges of heroin and prescription opioid addiction that is widespread in King County. Mayor Denis Law served on the King County Heroin Prescription Addiction Task Force, along with the mayors of Seattle and Auburn, to confront the issue and develop recommendations to address this issue. While Mayor Law supported seven of the eight proposed recommendations of the task force, he openly opposed the siting of injection facilities.

The city has worked hard to implement several of the recommendations including raising awareness of available treatment and disposal options, installing a drug disposal kiosk at city hall for unwanted or expired medicines, and expanding the distribution of naloxene.
