Several Filmmaking Teams Set to Compete This Weekend in 50-hour Renton FilmFrenzy

WHAT:
FilmFrenzy2011It will be “lights, camera, action” all over Renton this weekend, as 16 local filmmakers and crews compete in the Fourth Annual Renton FilmFrenzy. Starting at 5 p.m. Friday, October 7, filmmakers will have 50 hours to write, shoot, edit and submit a four-minute film. Films must be completed by 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 9.

This year’s competition will feature seven student crews and nine Open Division filmmaking teams.

At the beginning of the competition on Friday night, participating filmmakers will be given three “CurveBall” challenges that must be incorporated into the films. The films must be completely shot in Renton and be appropriate for all audiences.

Prizes, Curvee Awards Gala and Downtown FilmTalk
The filmmakers will be competing for cash prizes plus coveted “Curvee” awards. Celebrating the slogan, “Renton, Ahead of the Curve,” the “Curvee” awards have been crafted by local glassworks studio, Uptown Glassworks.

The top films produced during the competition will be screened at the Renton FilmFrenzy Curvee Awards Gala at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center, 400 South 2nd Street, from 7 to– 9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25. The public is welcome to attend and there is no admission fee.

This year’s judges include Dustin Kaspar, Seattle International Film Festival; Dan Molvar, MagicHour Films; Jim Dever, KING TV; Sarah Eldridge, Renton Municipal Arts Commission; and representatives from theFilmSchool and Reel Grrls. This year’s cash awards include:

Best Picture   $500

Open Division
First Prize - $250
Second Prize -  $200
Third Prize - $150

Student Division

Other Key FilmFrenzy Programs
Renton FilmFrenzy Screening, October 24 – all completed films will be shown at the first Renton FilmFrenzy Screening at the Renton Civic Theatre, 507 South Third Street, in downtown Renton. The screening will start at 7 p.m. Those in attendance will vote on their favorite film and a special Curvee will be presented to the winner at the Awards Gala on October 25.

Renton Downtown FilmTalk, October 26 - will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, at various venues in downtown Renton. During the FilmTalk, Frenzy filmmakers will be on hand to discuss their work and their filmmaking process. A raffle with a number of prizes will be held at each venue.

People’s Choice Award - Thanks to the Renton Reporter, members of the public will have the chance to vote on their favorite Renton FilmFrenzy films. All films entered will be posted on the Renton Reporter website for viewing and voting after the Curvee Awards Gala. The winning film will receive a special “People’s Choice” Curvee award presented at a November Renton City Council meeting.
