Fine Art Sculptor David Shenk at Carco Theatre

David Shenk SculptorThe Renton Municipal Arts Commission proudly presents an exhibit of the works of fine art sculpture David Shenk. The exhibit will be on display until April 1, 2011. Members of the public are welcome to attend the artist reception on Saturday, March 12, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to view the art and meet the artist.

David Shenk is a Renton-based fine art sculptor who creates one-of-a-kind, three-dimensional “faces of man” hammered out of metal. David has a degree in Industrial Technology from Western Washington University with a focus on Vehicle Design.

David has worked in many mediums but his interest in metal sculpting grew out of his work restoring priceless vintage automobiles. Using a 2.5 ton Yoder power hammer and a variety of smaller tools, he is able to transform thick sheets of metal into lifelike representations of the human face. His latest pieces have included sculpted portraits of known individuals. These are not cast but rather formed by hundreds of thousands of precision hammer blows, shrinking and stretching the metal to leave behind a rich texture that shines like thousands of tiny mirrors.

According to David, his work “celebrates our shared humanity and speaks to the dignity of the individual. I want to restore our sense of purpose at a time when it is too soon forgotten.”
