Road Conditions and Abandoned Cars Making Things Difficult for Road Crews

RENTON: With continued winter weather conditions creating hazardous driving many city facilities remain closed today, Tuesday, November 23, 2010. The list of closures available at the time of this release includes:

  • Maplewood Golf Course and the River Rock Restaurant
  • Renton Community Center – Open until 10:00 p.m. tonight, November 23. (Renton Community Center acts as a Warming Shelter at this point)
  • Renton Senior Activity Center – Open until 5:00 p.m. tonight, November 23.
  • Carco Theater – Closed on November 23.
  • Highlands Neighborhood Center – Closed November 23, and November 24.
  • North Highlands Neighborhood Center – Closed on November 23.
  • Kennydale Beach
  • Renton Court Operations are also suspended today and court dates will be rescheduled and mailed out

The Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the impacts of the winter storm and reports that all roads that had been closed in Renton due to the weather are now open.  All roads are passable if vehicles are properly equipped to navigate snow and ice and if drivers exercise caution.  Major difficulties on local roads at this time are the number of abandoned vehicles that create driving hazards for others, as well as interfere with sanding truck operations. The city’s Public Works crews are asking the public for their help to remove abandoned and/or damaged vehicles from roadways as soon as possible in order to better assist them, and reduce the risk for other drivers.

Cold temperatures are going to continue throughout the day and into tomorrow according to forecasters so drivers again are reminded to drive only when necessary and to be prepared with a full tank of gas and emergency supplies.

Overnight there were reports of as many as 170-200 customers in Renton who briefly lost power. However all power has been restored at this time.
