The Renton Municipal Arts Commission proudly presents original SUMI-E (Japanese Ink Painting) by Darlene Dihel. The exhibit will be on display October 11 through November 12, 2010.  Members of the public are welcome to attend the opening reception on Saturday, October 16, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. to view the art and meet the artist.

Japanese Ink Paintings by Darlene DihelDarlene Dihel is a retired teacher who is actively involved with SUMI-E, Japanese Ink Painting. The philosophy of SUMI-E is characteristic of the spirit of zen where nothing is wasted and the world is expressed in a language reduced to the farthest, most essential limits.  SUMI means “black ink stick” and E represents the word “picture.”

Dihel is a self-taught SUMI-E artist but has recently received formal instruction from the area’s master Sumi artists.  A recent trip to China stirred Darlene’s appetite for painting scenes of China’s majestic Yellow Mountains.  She shares her love of SUMI-E by teaching workshops at various venues in Washington and Oregon.  The artist claims to have come “full circle” as she is a native to Renton, graduating from Renton High School in 1953 and college at Central Washington University in 1957. She is currently living in Gig Harbor.
