Renton: City of Renton volunteer Julie Schmitke is one of a select number of volunteers from across the state being recognized by Governor Gregoire and the Washington Commission for National and Community Services (WCNCS) for her outstanding contributions as a volunteer.

GovernorAwardVolunteer2010Schmitke is being recognized for her leadership with Greater Renton Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) .  Greater Renton COAD comprises neighborhoods, schools, businesses, government, faith communities and non-profit organizations. Its mission is to identify, organize and deploy resources to help meet people’s needs after a disaster and as part of the recovery process.  Under Schmitke’s leadership, the Greater Renton COAD has developed an operational plan and has grown to include 39 member organizations.

“The city is honored to have Julie Schmitke as part of our team,” said Deborah Needham, Emergency Management Director. “Her dedicated leadership and compassion are continually demonstrated in her efforts, willingness and outstanding contributions.”

In addition to Schmitke’s work with COAD, she also volunteers for the city’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program and Renton Emergency Communication Service (RECS) amateur radio program.

Volunteers identified to receive this prestigious award were nominated and then selected through a process conducted by the Citizen Corps program.  Schmitke will receive her award and be formally recognized at the 2010 Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards Ceremony at the Executive Mansion in Olympia on April 19, 2010.

The Seattle Mariners, the Washington Commission for National & Community Service, 710 ESPN Seattle, News Talk 97.3 KIRO FM and 770 KTTH will also be recognizing Schmitke and other volunteers at their Salute to Volunteers event on April 20, 2010, at Safeco Field.

Volunteers are critical to the success of many of the programs and services the city provides.  To learn more about how you can volunteer for Greater Renton COAD, become a CERT member, or join RECS, visit or call 425 430-7041.
