Arbor Day 2010Renton, WA - For the second year, Renton was recognized as a Tree City USA Community by the non-profit organization Arbor Day Foundation. Renton also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in the community forestry program. This prestigious award honors environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities. Renton received the Growth Award for demonstrating progress in the forestry program through education and public relations, publicity, tree inventory and analysis, tree planting and maintenance and a tree maintenance budget. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The city’s annual Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration will be on Saturday, April 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Ron Regis Park.  Arbor Day is celebrated to promote the planting and care of trees, which is one of the most effective ways to protect the environment. Volunteers are encouraged to join the celebration and help plant trees and shrubs, spread landscaping chips or clean areas in the park along the Cedar River trail and help promote a healthy environment.

“The city encourages all citizens to plant trees and join in the celebration to promote nature’s well-being for this and future generations,” said Mayor Denis Law.  “The Arbor Day event is an opportunity to bring the community together for the environment.”
