Renton’s Community Emergency Response Teams Get Ready for the Next Disaster

Volunteer Graduates Practice Disaster Response Skills, May 17

Renton Fire and Emergency Services has scheduled a disaster simulation exercise and training at Fire Station 14, 1900 Lind Avenue SW in Renton. This simulation is part of the training program for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). CERT is a national program which provides training to help people prepare their homes and neighborhoods for disaster. CERT graduates receive 24 hours of training and learn about fire suppression, first aid, search and rescue, terrorism, incident command and disaster psychology. CERT trained individuals are able to work as part of a team in their neighborhood in order to meet the needs of residents after a disaster. The disaster simulation is the final class in the series, and provides an opportunity to practice in a realistic disaster scenario. With 35 students, this is the largest CERT class to graduate in Renton.  Including staff, volunteers and victims, 80 people are expected to participate in the drill. CERT classes are offered in the spring and fall.
