City of Renton Names New Human Resources Administrator

RENTON: The City of Renton is pleased to announce that Nancy Carlson has been appointed Human Resources Administrator.  Ms. Carlson will assume her new role effective April 7, 2008.

Under the direction of the Mayor and the Chief Administrative Officer, and as a member of the senior management team, Carlson will be responsible for providing executive leadership and direction for all department personnel and activities. She will be responsible for planning, organizing and directing departmental operations and functions; personnel policies and programs; and providing human resource services.

“Nancy brings enormous institutional knowledge and a spirit of innovation to the position of Human Resources Administrator,” said Mayor Law. “We are very fortunate to have a professional with Nancy's qualifications join our team. She understands the challenges of helping us manage the city's growing and diverse work force and achieving our goal of having the most effective and efficient city government in the Puget Sound region."

Carlson has served as the Human Resources Director for the City of Fremont, CA, since 2002. Prior to this, Nancy served as labor relations director for Kaiser Permanente Hospitals and Swedish Medical Center. She was also assistant director/labor relations manager for King County's Office of Human Resource Management in 1993.

"Renton is a remarkable city with great employees who provide crucial services to citizens each and every day,” said Carlson. “I am honored to join this great team and look forward to serving the employees of the City of Renton and the residents of Renton.”

Carlson has over 15 years of senior and executive level management experience in the field of human resources and labor relations in Alaska, Washington and California. As the Assistant Director/Labor Relations manager for King County’s Office of Human Resource Management she was the county’s lead spokesperson for human resource issues during the Metro/King County consolidation. She also brings experience from the private sector and was the chief negotiator for collective bargaining contracts when she worked at Kaiser Permanente and Swedish Medical Center.

Ms. Carlson earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, graduating from the University of San Francisco, California. Her graduate studies are in Communication Theory from California State University in Northridge. She has completed the certificate program in labor relations at the University of Alaska. Her professional affiliations and memberships include IPMA-HR, National Employment Institute, National Association of the Public Employer Labor Association and the Society for Human Resource Management. 

“Nancy Carlson has a strong background in labor relations and employee issues and understands the importance of this job,” said Council President Marcie Palmer. “She will be able to guide our human resources efforts and build upon Renton’s legacy as an ideal city in which to live, work and play.”

Carlson was attracted to the growth and revitalization that are taking place in Renton and believes that this provides opportunities for creative and innovative leadership.  She has spent her professional life seeking continuous improvement and new challenges.  Her leadership philosophy is one of collaboration, inclusiveness, open dialogue, and strong and effective partnerships.
