Community joins annual advertising blitz with “Ahead of the Curve” brand

RENTON, WA-The Renton Community Marketing Campaign will showcase the city and its brand “Renton. Ahead of the Curve.” in a television commercial to be aired during the Super Bowl XLII pre-game show.
The advertisement, which first debuted during the Seattle Seahawks’ NFC Wild Card game on January 5, 2008, features actor/comedian John Keister, who regularly panned Renton on his groundbreaking comedy show “Almost Live,” which was produced and broadcast by KING-TV from 1984 to 1999.

“The response to the first airing of the commercial has been tremendous,” said Alex Pietsch, administrator of the city’s Department of Economic Development, Neighborhoods and Strategic Planning, who directs the community marketing campaign and notes the ad has been uploaded multiple times to YouTube and has been featured on several blogs. “We continue to hear from people who love the ad and are impressed by the tremendous progress that has been made here. People are definitely talking about Renton!”

Over the past decade, Renton has undergone a remarkable transformation, shaking a historic blue-collar image and becoming one of the fastest growing communities in King County.

“Renton is one of the most dynamic places today,” said Mayor Denis Law. “We have great neighborhoods, excellent schools, a diverse business community, Renton Technical College, and Valley Medical Center. Several exciting developments are under construction such as the Seattle Seahawks’ Virginia Mason Athletic Center and The Landing, our 68-acre mixed-use urban village.”

The Renton Community Marketing Campaign celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2008. The partnership includes the City of Renton, Renton Chamber of Commerce, Renton Visitor’s Connection, Renton School District, Renton Technical College, and Valley Medical Center. The partnership has been recognized nationally for its “Ahead of the Curve” brand and as one of the first in a trend of communities working to market themselves.

Previous marketing efforts have focused on radio and print advertisements. This is the campaign’s first foray into broadcast television.

“There is no grander stage for advertising than the Super Bowl,” said Bill Taylor, CEO of the Renton Chamber of Commerce. “Renton is really showing its stuff by joining this branding blitz. This is yet another demonstration that ‘Ahead of the Curve’ is more than just a marketing slogan, it is a way of life in Renton.”

The ad can be viewed on the city's website.
