Ham Operators Invaluable During Emergencies, Connect with Others Around the World

RENTON—The City of Renton and the Mike and Key Amateur Radio Club are co-sponsoring Ham Radio Licensing classes to be held on January 11, 12 and 13, 2008. Ham radio operators, also referred to as amateur radio operators, are vital to communications during emergencies, and they are able to connect with other operators from around the world.

“Our Emergency Operations Center (EOC) depends on amateur radio operators as our backup communications resource,” said Deborah Needham, Emergency Management Director for the City of Renton. “I will be taking this class, too, because if I am the first person in the EOC and all our normal communication are down, I need to know how to operate the radios to be able to summon more help.” She points out that during the recent severe flooding, some of the hardest hit counties used amateur radio for critical communications to help manage the emergency.

The course offered by Renton and the radio club is for the Technician Class License and is the current entry-level license for amateur radio (ham radio). The course will give students voice privileges on one shortwave band and all of the VHF/UHF frequencies available to ham radio. Some pre-study will be required on the student’s own time.
