City of Renton and BNSF Railway Company Replace Railroad Bridges

RENTON:  The BNSF Railway Company, in cooperation with the City of Renton, will be replacing railroad bridges in downtown Renton to allow for future transportation improvements, provide reliable rail service to The Boeing Company, and improve drainage. The railroad bridges that will be replaced cross over Rainier Avenue South, Hardie Avenue SW, and Shattuck Avenue South.  Detours will be in place during the construction. Local access to businesses along Rainier Avenue will be available.

Rainier Avenue South, August 11-August 15:

Closed at railroad bridge (between South Fourth Place and South Seventh Street) to remove the railroad bridge piers. Suggested Detour: Southbound-From Rainier Avenue South, take SW Sunset Boulevard heading to Hardie Avenue SW and follow to SR-167 or take South Third Street to Shattuck Avenue South and follow to South Seventh Street. Northbound-From Rainer Avenue South, take South Seventh Street to Shattuck Avenue South and follow to South Second Street or take SW Seventh Street to Hardie Avenue SW and follow to SW Sunset Boulevard. Local access to area businesses available.

Hardie Avenue Southwest, August 16-August 20:

Closed at railroad bridge (between Southwest Fifth Place and Southwest Seventh Street) to remove the railroad bridge piers. Local access to area businesses available.

Shattuck Avenue South, August 1-August 10 and August 16-December 28:

Closed at railroad bridge (between South Fourth Place and Houser). Street open to traffic during Rainier Avenue street closure. Street reopened to traffic in 2008 once street improvements are complete. Local access to area businesses available.

While local motorists, businesses and residents may be affected by noise and traffic delays during construction, especially on Rainer Avenue, the replacement of the railroad bridges will enable the city to provide significant street improvements in the future. The replacement of the railroad bridge over Rainier Avenue will result in the widening of Rainier Avenue to include three lanes in each direction, left hand turn access at multiple points, and Business Access Transit (BAT) lanes. The street opening at the Shattuck Avenue railroad bridge is currently wide enough for only one vehicle to pass at a time. This replacement will result in one lane in each direction and sidewalks underneath the new railroad bridge. These projects will also add to the vertical clearance. The work is being done quickly and with less expense since BNSF is doing the bridge replacements.
