Housing Repair Assistance Program

The Housing Repair Assistance Program is focused on making homes healthy for eligible homeowners. The core components of healthy housing are:

  • Keep it dry
  • Keep it clean
  • Keep home free of pests
  • Keep it ventilated
  • Keep it safe
  • Keep it contaminant free
  • Keep it maintained

The services are provided at no cost to the client. The maximum expenditure per client per calendar year is $6,000. There is a ten-year limit of $10,000.  The distribution of this funding will be at Human Services staff discretion. It will be based on the priority of repairs/services. The highest priority repairs/services are: if it is moisture or air quality related, an emergency, a hardship if the repair is not completed in a timely manner, if there is funding from other sources so that funds can be leveraged, the scope of work, date of request, and cost.

Services are done on the primary structure/house only (no carports, free-standing garages or fences).

Some of the emergency repairs/services covered are listed in order of priority.

  • Sewer or waste water system backed up into home
  • Primary heating system needing repair
  • Plumbing leaks creating an opportunity for mold and moisture
  • Roof repair to prevent water infiltration into home
  • Failed hot water heating system repair and/or replacement
  • Recalled Federal Pacific electrical panels

Some of the standard repairs/services covered are:

  • Leaks in household faucet
  • Minor electrical repairs
  • Lighting and security lighting repairs/services installed at existing power source
  • Kitchen and bath drain system leaks repaired
  • Pest control
  • Grab bar installation
  • Keep homes safe and healthy

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible one must: (1) Live within the Renton City limits, (2) own the home for at least the last 12 months, and (3) have a total household adjusted gross income that is less than the Maximum Annual Income limits below. Click for more details.

The first service that is automatically provided is a home assessment that is done by Housing Repair Technician.  This gives us important information about your home that allows us to do repairs quickly and efficiently.  It is also how we prioritize the work to be provided at your home.

2. BY MAIL: 

  1. Download the City of Renton Housing Repair Assistance Program application.  (For questions about the application, call the Human Services office at  425-430-6600, or email your questions to humanservices@rentonwa.gov.
  2. Complete the application forms and mail them with the supporting financial documentation to the Human Services office at:

 CONTRACTORS 
 
The City of Renton Home Repair Program uses  a roster to invite contractors to bid on projects under $4,000.  The lowest reasonable cost and responsible bidder is selected.  Projects include: plumbing, roofing, electrical, furnace repair and replacement, sewer work, and general contracting.  The City of Renton retains the right to remove or suspend a company at any time, based on the City’s opinion of the company’s performance and responsibility.
 
To be on the roster, you will need:
  1. Washington State business license and Uniform Business Identification Number (UBI).
  2. City of Renton Business license.
  3. City of Renton vendor application.
  4. Proof of Insurance. For City of Renton insurance requirements.
  5. City of Renton Housing Repair Contractor application.

 Other Housing Repair Programs:

King County Housing Repair Program offers deferred payment, zero percent interest loans, and grants for necessary, quality of life home improvements

King County Housing Authority Weatherization free to qualified low-income homeowners and renters

Rampathon- Master Builder's Association builds wheel chair access ramps for free for low-income homeowners in King and Snohomish County.  Applications are accepted September through Mid-February, and the ramps are built over a weekend in May.
