Comprehensive Plan Update

The Renton Comprehensive Plan was adopted on June 22, 2015. For the complete Plan, visit the Comprehensive Plan page.

The City of Renton is updating its Comprehensive Plan in accordance with the Washington State Growth Management Act (GMA) governed by RCW 36.70A. Comprehensive Plans establish policies for community growth and development for the next 20 years. Most jurisdictions in the state are required to adopt a Comprehensive Plan consistent with the GMA and to update their plan every eight years. Renton’s periodic update is required to be adopted by June 30, 2015.

Updating the Comprehensive Plan is a collaborative and arduous process that commenced nearly two years ago. There is a tentative schedule for completing the remaining work. Public participation is a key component of this effort. A Public Participation Plan has been created for two purposes. Firstly, to identify potential stakeholders and invite their participation in the planning process, and secondly, to guide public participation efforts throughout the process to ensure early and continuous involvement in decision-making. Efforts to ensure public participation will continue to evolve throughout the life of the project.

Public Meetings

The Planning Commission will be reviewing different aspects of the Comprehensive Plan update during their meetings in 2015. Find out more information by visiting the Planning Commission page.

The elements and topics presented for discussion were: Capital Facilities, Housing and Human Services, Critical Areas, Community Planning, Land Use, and Transportation. A computer was also available for people to take the online survey. Participant comments were recorded in the Comment and Response matrix for this project.

Public Workshop #2

On June 26, 2013, a second public open house was held. Participants listened to a short presentation and then could explore topics in more depth with staff and others at one of six topic stations. Information reporting back from the first public workshop (see below) on the Comprehensive Plan Vision was at one station. The second station provided information about the Community Needs Analysis that was used as part of the Housing and Human Services Element. The other four stations presented information about Land Use (including the Comprehensive Plan Map), Economic Development, Utilities, and Parks, Recreation, and Natural Areas. Participant comments were recorded in the Comment and Response matrix for this project.

Public Workshop #1 - Vision

On February 28, 2013, the Department of Community and Economic Development held a public Open House at Renton City Hall. Participants watched a short presentation on the Comprehensive Plan and then reviewed statements summarizing the current Plan’s Vision. Participants commented on the current Vision and on what Renton should be like in 20 years. There was also the ability to take a short survey. You can take a look at the survey results and workshop comments. Information gathered at the Open House and through the survey was used to develop the Vision for the Comprehensive Plan.
