Administrative Policy/Code Interpretation Process

What is the purpose of a code interpretation?

A code interpretation request allows anyone to request for a written code interpretation of Development Regulations in the Renton Municipal Code (RMC).  An interpretation may be requested for a specific development proposal or for the general application of a RMC section.  Interpretations may be initiated by the Department.

How do I submit my request?

Submit in writing the following information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone Number
  • Code Section for Interpretation
  • Narrative explaining the basis for your request

Send all requests to:

City of Renton
Planning Division
1055 S Grady Way, Floor 6,
Renton, WA 98057

What is the timeline for processing an interpretation request?

Draft interpretations will be posted online within a reasonable period from the date of submittal.  Public comments on draft interpretations may be provided during a 14 day comment period following the posting online.  Interpretations will be issued at the end of the comment period, subject to comments received.

Is there an appeal process?

To appeal a determination, a written appeal accompanied by the required filing fee must be filed with the City's Hearing Examiner (1055 S Grady Way, Renton, WA 98057 425.430.6515) no more than 14 days from the date of issuance.  Your submittal should explain the basis for your appeal.  Section 4-8-110 of the Renton Municipal Code provides further information on the appeal process.

Will the issued interpretation be codified?

All issued interpretations will be placed on the City's annual docket list to be codified in the Renton Municipal Code the following year.
